 t agents close in\, the hardened gangsters adopt pickpocket Tomijiro (Yama
 moto) and help him buy his girlfriend (Sakai) from out of a brothel. This 
 rarely screened film is a masterfully paced character study in moody black
 -and-white\, and the final chapter in Kobayashi and Nakadai’s storied coll
