DESCRIPTION:\n	With Tatsuya Nakadai in person \n\n\n	Dir. Masaki Kobayashi.
  1962\, 133 mins. 35mm. With Tatsuya Nakadai\, Rentaro Mikuni\, Shima Iwas
hita. In Harakiri\,set in the early seventeenth century when the oppressiv
e reign of the Tokugawa shogunate had just begun\, Kobayashi uses the peri
od film to repudiate the tradition of unthinking obeisance to established
power structures in Japanese society. Nakadai plays well beyond his years
as the aging samurai Hanshiro Tsugumo\, who sets out to avenge the death o
f his son-in-law in a ritual suicide presided over by the disdainful Iyi c
lan. Film historian Joan Mellen called this “the most vibrant expression o
f [Kobayashi’s] belief that life is not worth living unless injustice is c
onfronted with unrelenting force and single-minded purpose.” \n\n\n	Ticket
s: $15 ($9 for Museum members at the Film Lover\, Dual\, and Family levels
/ free for members at the Silver Screen level and above). Order tickets o
nline. (Members may contact members@movingimage.us with any questions rega
