ma of Wojciech Has \n\n\nDir. Wojciech Has. 1965\, 184 mins. plus intermis
sion. Newly restored DCP. With Zbigniew Cybulski\, Iga Cembrzyńska. A favo
rite film of Jerry Garcia and Luis Buñuel\, The Saragossa Manuscript is a
brilliant adaptation of one of the greatest works of world literature. A c
ult classic\, it is a Chinese box tale—a travel story about the supernatur
al and mystical opposed to the humanist and material world. In 1739\, Alph
onse van Worden crosses the wild range of the Sierra Morena\, a land said
to be inhabited only by demons—evil spirits and invisible hands that push
travelers into chasms. Although he refuses to listen to those tales\, his
journey will be a sequence of supernatural and frightful events. But maybe
they are only illusions? The film will be introduced by Columbia Universi
ty professor Annette Insdorf\, whose new book on Wojciech Has follows her
definitive study of the films of Krzysztof Kieslowski\, Double Lives\, Sec
ond Chances. \n\n\nAnnette Insdorf will sign copies of Intimations: The Ci
