  to his wife form the basis of this gorgeous\, sublimely stirring saga of 
 love and war. Written in the 1970s while the author was stationed in Angol
 a during the Portuguese Colonial War\, the letters recount his experiences
  working in a military hospital\, his growing disillusionment with the con
 flict\, and\, above all\, his yearning for his wife and child. The combina
 tion of Lobo Antunes’ rapturously beautiful prose and the luscious black a
 nd white cinematography yields an exquisite aesthetic experience. \n	\n	\n
