DESCRIPTION:With director Miao Wang in person. Post-film discussion to be m
oderated by Yong Lu.&nbsp\;\n\n \n\nDir. Miao Wang. 2017\, 90 mins. Digit
al projection. Filmed over three years in China and the United States\, ac
claimed director Miao Wang presents a multi-layered coming-of-age tale tha
t follows two affluent and cosmopolitan teenagers as they settle into a bo
arding school in blue-collar rural Maine. Part of the enormous wave of 'pa
rachute students' from China enrolling in U.S. private schools\, bubbly\,
fun-loving Stella and introspective Harry come seeking a Western-style edu
cation and Hollywoodized high school experience. As they encounter homesic
kness and a more nuanced understanding of the American dream\, Wang and ac
e cinematographer Sean Price Williams let the camera fully register those
complications\, steering clear of simplified portraiture to instead fashio
n a film as exploratory and sensitive as that of their brave and tentative
young subjects. After the film\, Miao Wang will participate in a discussi
on moderated by Yong Lu\,&nbsp\;CEO and Founder of Evergreen Asia Advisors
and the author of two books on America’s nonprofit sector and its applica
tions to China\, The Third Force (2011) and Fundraising for a Cause (2014)
.\n\n\n'Astute and absorbing. Maineland takes up a large and complicated s
et of topics—the global economy\, the shifting relations between East and
West\, the commodification of American education—and addresses them with u
nderstated delicacy.'—A.O. Scott\, The New York Times \n\n\nThis screening
is sold out. A second screening has been added on Sunday\, April 29\, at
 4:30 p.m.&nbsp\; Tickets: $15 ($11 seniors and students / $9 youth (ages 3
