DESCRIPTION:With directors Véréna Paravel and Lucien Castaing-Taylor in per
 son \n\n\nDirs. Véréna Paravel\, Lucien Castaing-Taylor. 2017\, 97 mins. D
igital projection. In Japanese and French with English subtitles. This new
film from the pioneering directors behind the landmark documentary Leviat
han&nbsp\;is a discomfitingly experiential portrait of unacceptable desire
 s. On June 13\, 1981\, 32-year-old Sorbonne student Issei Sagawa was arres
ted in Paris after being caught discarding two suitcases containing the re
mains of his Dutch classmate\, who he had murdered and begun to consume. D
eclared legally insane\, he returned to Japan\, where he has been a free m
an ever since. Though ostracized from society\, Sagawa has made a living o
ff his crime by writing novels\, drawing manga\, and appearing in salaciou
s documentaries and sexploitation films. Meanwhile his brother\, Jun Sagaw
a\, harbors extreme impulses of his own. With Caniba\, Paravel and Castain
 g-Taylor—titans of Harvard's celebrated Sensory Ethnography Lab—pursue a m
inimalist audiovisual strategy that is in some ways the inverse of the max
imalist Leviathan\, fostering unease and reflection through deceptively me
andering conversation and subtly shifting focus. And as such Caniba is a s
ingular cinematic experience: a horror movie by way of the documentary int
erview. A Grasshopper Films release. \n\n\n“You’d have a difficult time fi
nding another film that contains this much fascinating and terrible humani
 ty.”—Dan Sullivan\, Cinema Scope&nbsp\; \n\n\nTickets: $15 ($7 Museum memb
