DESCRIPTION:Dirs. Véréna Paravel\, Lucien Castaing-Taylor. 2017\, 97 mins.
Digital projection. In Japanese and French with English subtitles. This ne
w film from the pioneering directors behind the landmark documentary Levia
than is a discomfitingly experiential portrait of unacceptable desires. On
June 13\, 1981\, 32-year-old Sorbonne student Issei Sagawa was arrested i
n Paris after being caught discarding two suitcases containing the remains
of his Dutch classmate\, who he had murdered and begun to consume. Declar
ed legally insane\, he returned to Japan\, where he has been a free man ev
er since. Though ostracized from society\, Sagawa has made a living off hi
s crime by writing novels\, drawing manga\, and appearing in salacious doc
umentaries and sexploitation films. Meanwhile his brother\, Jun Sagawa\, h
arbors extreme impulses of his own. With Caniba\, Paravel and Castaing-Tay
 lor—titans of Harvard's celebrated Sensory Ethnography Lab—pursue a minima
list audiovisual strategy that is in some ways the inverse of the maximali
st Leviathan\, fostering unease and reflection through deceptively meander
ing conversation and subtly shifting focus. And as such Caniba is a singul
ar cinematic experience: a horror movie by way of the documentary intervie
 w. A Grasshopper Film release. \n\n\n“You’d have a difficult time finding
another film that contains this much fascinating and terrible humanity.”—D
